Relationship between phytoplankton structure and environmental variables in tropical reservoirs with different trophic states

Abstract: Phytoplankton structure is influenced by environmental factors, seasonal cycles and the trophic state of the system. The objective of the present study was to identify guilds of phytoplankton species that are representative of seasonality and trophic status. We evaluated phytoplankton biomass and species composition in five tropical reservoirs, with different trophic states and during rainy and dry periods. At most of the sampling sites, total biomass was higher during the rainy season. Moreover, high cyanobac… Show more

“…The water levels were high during the sampling efforts in the present study. It could also be that the study reservoirs were not hypereutrophic, which seems to favour the dominance of M. aeruginosa (De Oliveira et al, 2020). Because M. aeruginosa was likely present in these two reservoirs in previous studies (Santos-Flores, 2001), it is important to continue sampling the phytoplankton community to determine any potential blue-green algae patterns.…”

“…Although desmid contributed to more than 90% of total average biomass in the mesotrophic reservoir, non-diazotrophic cyanobacteria and other algae such as diatoms and synurophytes were important in the phytoplankton biomass throughout the study period. Phytoplankton composition in mesotrophic reservoirs is usually made up of green algae, diatoms, and flagellates, which are sensitive to changes in nutrient concentrations and physical variables caused by seasonal variations (Oliveira et al 2020). In the present In addition to nitrogen, the pH variation (from acid to alkaline) caused changes in the structure of the phytoplankton community in the mesotrophic reservoir.…”
