Relationship Between Physician Burnout and Patient’s Perception of Bedside Time Spent by Physicians

Abstract: Although the adverse effect of burnout on physicians has been widely documented, studies have shown an inconsistent relationship between burnout and the quality of patient care. We hypothesized that physician burnout will have an inverse relationship with the time spent at the bedside by physicians. In a cross-sectional study, we surveyed patients on their perception of the time spent by their physician on the day of the survey (4 categories: 0-5, 6-10, 11-15, >15 minutes). Oldenburg Burnout Inventory was used… Show more

“…So it is easy for physicians to job burnout and even neglective behavior, such as attending to fewer patients or spending less time at the bedside. 41 Chênevert (2021) also suggested that stress is a strong precursor of emotional exhaustion as well as a ‘loss spiral’ ultimately culminating in burnout and health problems. 42 Therefore, hospitals need to design multiple career development channels for physicians, such as clinical type, teaching type, and scientific research type to make physicians have confidence in their professional development.…”

“…22 We measured burnout using the Oldenburg Burnout Inventory, a publicly available 16-question assessment composed of 2 dimensions: exhaustion and disengagement. Consistent with the literature, 23-25 we defined scores of ≥2.25 on exhaustion and ≥2.1 on disengagement as “high.” We designated respondents as “burned out” if responses indicated high exhaustion and high disengagement and designated them as “at risk” if scores were high on only 1 subscale.…”
