Relationship between parental lung function and their children's lung function early in life

Abstract: on behalf of the WHISTLER study group ABSTRACT: This study investigated the relationship between parental lung function and their children's lung function measured early in life.Infants were participants in the Wheezing Illnesses Study Leidsche Rijn (WHISTLER). Lung function was measured before the age of 2 months using the single occlusion technique. Parental data on lung function (spirometry), medical history and environmental factors were obtained from the linked database of the Utrecht Health Project.Paren… Show more

“…The research nurse will also assess the presence of eczema using the cumulative objective scoring index for atopic dermatitis (SCORAD) [20] (Table 2). During a separate home visit at 4 months of age, lung function tests will be performed with the Single Occlusion Technique (WHISTLER) by a dedicated research nurse [21,22].…”

“…In some cases, this may reflect the effects of maternal exposures to environmental toxicants during pregnancy and this is discussed in a subsequent section of this review. However, lung function is also partially under genetic influence and this may contribute to low-lung function in asthmatics (20, 21) and to the familial risk seen in offspring of asthmatic parents. The extent to which genetically determined lung function is altered by postnatal environmental exposures is uncertain.…”

“…Pulmonary function measures show familial aggregation, with evidence for genetic effects in twin and family studies 9,10 . We previously reported associations between FEV 1 or FEV 1 /FVC and at least 27 genetic loci using large-scale meta-analyses of genome-wide association studies (GWAS) 1114 .…”
