“…The prevailing sentiment among the majority of orthodontists is that orthodontic intervention does not significantly influence TMD symptoms. This aligns with the outcomes of most prior studies, which suggest that orthodontic treatment neither prevents nor precipitates TMDs [ 59 61 ]. However, in contradiction to the findings reported by a literature review [ 62 ], which proposed that orthodontic intervention does not augment the risk of developing TMD signs and symptoms, irrespective of the therapeutic technique employed and the extraction status, professionals in oral surgery and oral medicine expressed divergent views.…”

“…It has been consistently reported that realization of the goals of optimal occlusion, functional stability in masticatory structures, muscle equilibration, and an orthopedically stable relationship between the occlusal position of the teeth and the joint position with orthodontic treatment might play an important role in preventing or diminishing the risk factors associated with development of TMDs. 14,54 To the best of our knowledge, the present study is first of its kind to rule out the suspected role of orthodontics in the etiopathogenesis of TMD using biometric assessment. The major advantages of these biometric equipment were digital documentation, repeatable measurement, and non-radiating and quantitative assessment of TMD signs and symptoms.…”

“…[7][8][9][10] Furthermore, extensive reviews and a few prospective studies have also concluded that irrespective of the orthodontic technique and mechanics employed, the extraction or nonextraction protocols and the type of presenting malocclusion, orthodontic therapy does not precipitate or increase the risk for development of TMD signs and symptoms. [11][12][13][14][15][16] Even so, the conflict has not been fully settled, as some studies have even reported less-prevalent TMD signs and symptoms in orthodontically treated patients compared with untreated subjects. 16,17 Moreover, even with existence of well-designed studies elucidating the TMD-orthodontic interrelationship, there is lack of strong evidence-based literature and some orthodontists still suffer from anecdotal testimonials.…”

“…An extensive systematic review reported significant associations between the presence of some occlusal factors (a skeletal open bite, a unilateral crossbite, the absence of five or more teeth, a deep overbite, and a severe overjet) and TMD signs and symptoms (McNamara Jr et al, 1995). Tagkli et al (2017) reported that patients with normal occlusion had fewer TMD symptoms than those with any type of malocclusion, either treated or untreated. Data mining (often termed knowledge discovery) is a powerful statistical method; a large dataset gathered from different perspectives can be summarised and analysed to yield useful practical information revealing important relationships (Kantardzic, 2008).…”
