Relationship between MRPV Model Parameters from MISRL2 Land Surface Product and Land Covers: A Case Study within Mainland Spain

Abstract: Abstract:In this study, we showed that the multi-angle satellite remote sensing product, MISR L2 Land Surface (MIL2ASLS), which has a scale of 1.1 km, could be suitable for improving land-cover studies. Using seven images from this product, captured by the multi-angle imaging spectroradiometer sensor (MISR), we explored the values reached by the three parameters (ρ0, Θ, and k) of the Rahman-Pinty-Verstraete model, which was modified by Martonchick (MRPV). Thereafter, we compared the values and behaviors shown … Show more

“…With satellite sensors, the study of phenology is possible at an adequate temporal and spatial resolution, without a high cost for the users. For example, the satellite sensors of MODIS [17,18], Landsat [19,20], AVHRR [21], VIIRS [22], and MERIS [23] have been widely used in phenological studies, and various regional [24,25], national [26,27], and global [28][29][30] phenological studies have been conducted. Concerning China's grasslands, the plant phenology in northwest China has been hotly discussed [27,[31][32][33], because northwest China is well known for its extremely harsh environment and high sensitivity to climate change [34,35].…”

“…On one hand, the changes in the phenology and their relation to temperature or precipitation have been studied repeatedly (e.g., [10,36,37]). On the other hand, the temporal-spatial patterns of the phenological changes (the variations of dates of the SOS, EOS, POS, and LOS) have been examined (e.g., [26,31,38]). In particular, the starting date of the plant growing season (SOS) has provoked fierce debate (e.g., [34,[39][40][41][42][43][44]).…”

“…In this manner, it is easy to find studies where MISR products have been successfully used. Various authors (e.g., [36][37][38][39][40]) have proven their utility for characterizing the vegetal canopy and for mapping vegetation and land covers at medium and large spatial scales. This paper deals with the application of multiangular MISR data to study the effect of surface anisotropy and directional information on the classification accuracy of almost pure pixels of different land covers with a different rate of disaggregation classes in mainland Spain.…”
