Coal liquefaction of low-rank coals is of interest because of the formation of a liquid fuel with lower molecular weight and a higher H/C ratio than those of the parent coal, which itself is difficult to use. This study determined the optimum conditions for liquefaction of Mukah Balingian (MB) low-rank Malaysian coal using a supercritical water-tetralin mixture. Response surface methodology (RSM) based on central composite rotatable design (CCRD) was applied to optimize the combination effect of two important reaction variables, i.e. reaction temperature ( • C) and solvent mixture ratios. The reaction was performed via a high-temperature, high-pressure batch-wise reactor system. A total of 13 individual experiments were conducted and the results showed that the RSM based on CCRD is very applicable to the coal liquefaction process studied in this system. The predicted optimum conditions for liquefaction of MB coal was 450• C reaction temperature and 30 : 70 water-tetralin ratio, resulting in coal conversion and an oil yield of 70.6 and 66.1%, respectively. 

Karakteristik batubara seperti calorie value, proximate, ultimate, kandungan maseral dan mineral memiliki pengaruh yang cukup signifikan pada proses konversi batubara peringkat rendah menjadi bahan bakar cair. Tinjauan ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji karakteristik batubara asal Sulawesi Tengah yang terdiri dari kabupaten/kota seperti Donggala, Sigi, Morowali, Buol dan Banggai Kepulauan terhadap kinerja proses konversi menjadi bahan bakar cair melalui metode piolisis. Metodologi penelitian, yaitu melakukan review terhadap literatur yang relevan dengan karakteristik batubara asal Sulawesi Tengah dan pengaruhnya terhadap proses konversi menjadi bahan bakar cair. Berdasarkan karakteristik berupa calorie value, proximate, ultimate, kandungan maseral dan mineral dari batubara asal Kabupaten Banggai Kepulauan menunjukkan karakteristik sebagai batubara terbaik asal Sulawesi Tengah untuk dikonversi menjadi bahan bakar cair melalui metode pirolisis. A flowing‐solvent liquefaction reactor with a continuous solvent sweep through a fixed bed of coal has been developed. The reactor is heated by computer‐controlled direct electrical resistance heating, allowing the application of variable heating rates between 0.1 and 10 K/s to temperatures up to 450°C and holding times at peak temperature between zero and 1600 s. In contrast to liquefaction experiments using closed (batch) reactors, where products remain within the reactor for the duration of the experiment, solubilised liquefaction products are continuously swept out of the reaction zone, thus minimising the probability of secondary reactions. The apparatus has been proved by performing liquefaction experiments on a selection of European and American coals and maceral concentrates. Conversion data indicate that, unlike in microbomb experiments performed under similar conditions, high temperature, long residence time runs in the flowing solvent reactor show no increase in solid residue. Preliminary size exclusion chromatography results have shown that, in contrast with trends observed in microbomb reactors, products from the flowing‐solvent reactor increase in molecular mass with increasing reaction temperature and time. The work has been extended to cover the pyrolysis and liquefaction of maceral group concentrates, showing detailed differences between the behaviour of the lithotypes under different sets of reaction conditions.
