Relationship between leukoaraiosis, carotid intima-media thickness and intima-media thickness variability: Preliminary results

Abstract: • Intima-media thickness variability (IMTV) significantly correlates with leukoaraiosis volume. • IMTV could be used as a marker for cerebrovascular risk. • IMTV seems to be a better predictor of weighted mean difference than IMT.

“…From this data derives statistically significant correlation between IMTV value and WMH extension and the number of lesions preferentially located on the right hemisphere, while IMT did not show any significance or any predictive role for WMH's evolution. These findings would support the hypothesis according to which IMTV could represent an early marker of endothelial dysfunction in the carotid artery and predictor factor of LA [40]. Another item to evaluate, according to increased cerebrovascular risks, is the structural composition of atheromasic plaque; in particular, fatty components is a critical factor for carotid artery vulnerability and increased risk of micro-embolization Preprints (www.preprints.org) | NOT PEER-REVIEWED | Posted: 5 January 2020 doi:10.20944/preprints202001.0042.v1…”

“…This approach allows testing the potential association of different HU values according to the keV used, and the purpose was to assess if there is a correlation between the carotid CT plaque attenuation values measured by DECT scanner and brain LA. The rationale of this study relies on the fact that the etiopathogenesis of LA is not completely understood, 7,11,12,18 and even if most authors suggest that LA is due to small-vessel pathology, other evidence seems to support the hypothesis that large-vessel pathology, namely carotid artery, is related to the development and severity of LA.…”

“…11 However, recent published papers have linked this condition to large-vessel atherosclerosis. [12][13][14] Because of the potential association between carotid artery pathology and LA, we tried to explore the potential correlation between the volume of LA and the carotid artery plaque attenuation by considering the different HU levels owing to the different keV selection obtainable with the dual-energy scanner.…”
