Relationship between Laser Intensity at the Peripheral Nerve and Inhibitory Effect of Percutaneous Photobiomodulation on Neuronal Firing in a Rat Spinal Dorsal Horn

Abstract: Photobiomodulation is an effective treatment for pain. We previously reported that the direct laser irradiation of the exposed sciatic nerve inhibited firing in the rat spinal dorsal horn evoked by mechanical stimulation, corresponding to the noxious stimulus. However, percutaneous laser irradiation is used in clinical practice, and it is unclear whether it can inhibit the firing of the dorsal horn. In this study, we investigated whether the percutaneous laser irradiation of the sciatic nerve inhibits firing. … Show more

“…PBM is a treatment method that utilizes the biological effects of light from sources such as lasers and light emitting diodes [ 15 ], and has been shown to have an analgesic effect [ 16 18 ]. It is believed to inhibit the activity of Aδ and C fibers that transmit pain [ 19 22 ]. Because visceral pain from rectal hypersensitivity is also transmitted through Aδ and C fibers [ 23 , 24 ], PBM may be effective for colonic hypersensitivity, a typical symptom of IBS.…”
