Relationship between intensity of night shift work and antioxidant status in blood of nurses

Abstract: PurposeLight-at-night exposure can disrupt the human circadian rhythm via clock gene expressions. The circadian rhythm influences antioxidant enzymes’ activity and cellular mRNA levels of these enzymes. The employees working based on a shift system adjust to the changes occurring both on the cell level and on the level of the whole organism. Therefore, a question should be answered whether shift work disturbs oxidant–antioxidant balance and/or generates oxidative stress.MethodsA cross-sectional study was condu… Show more

“…This finding is similar to those of previous studies on CG expression in simulated or real shift workers, albeit with different study designs [10,11]. Other studies indicated that the expression of PER2 in peripheral blood cells is influenced by the polymorphism of genes important in regulating circadian rhythm [26] and by the antioxidant status of blood [27]. Genetic polymorphisms were not examined in the present study, but they could explain the unusually high PER2 expression levels observed in one study subject.…”

“…night shift instead of the normal daytime work can lead to medical problems caused by created oxidative stress [4,5]. It is found that there is a correlation between the exposure to night-lights and glutathione peroxidase activity in women working at nights [5,6]. On the other hand, waste and leaking anesthetic gases have a significant effect on the exposure of the operating room workers, causing reproductive, neurological, hematologic, immunologic, hepatic and renal system diseases [7].…”

“…In addition to that, the total plasma antioxidant capacity of night workers was found to be decreased at the end of the shift compared to the values measured during the shift [5]. The circadian rhythm affects the antioxidant enzyme activity and the cellular mRNA levels of this enzyme [6]. Operating room personnel are exposed to infectious agents, intensive stresses, anesthetic gases, radioactive materials, chemical substances, equipment and agents that are used in the sterilization of operating room and surgical materials.…”
