Relationship between inflammation and progression of an abdominal aortic aneurysm in a rabbit model based on 18F-FDG PET/CT imaging

Abstract: In the early stages of abdominal aortic aneurysm development, the inflammatory response of the arterial wall is significant, the local metabolic activity is strengthened, the SUVmax value of 18F-FDG is high, and the abdominal aortic aneurysm diameter experiences rapid growth. In the later stages of abdominal aortic aneurysm development, the diameter continues to increase; however, there are decreases in the wall inflammatory response, the local metabolic activity, and the SUVmax value of 18F-FDG. Thus, inflamm… Show more

“…[35][36][37] Both preclinical and clinical studies of gold-standard [ 18 F]FDG PET to assess glucose metabolism and inflammation in AAA have yielded varying results of both increased and variable [ 18 F]FDG uptake. [38][39][40][41] Some studies have shown that [ 18 F]FDG PET may be useful to predict AAA expansion and/or progression, 42,43 while other studies have contradicted this. 38,44 40,43,44 In a study of [ 18 F]FDG PET and contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), Kuzniar et al demonstrated that the hotspots of [ 18 F]FDG uptake and late gadolinium enhancement rarely coincide in AAA, although both are associated with aneurysm growth, raising interesting questions about the distribution of cellular activity in AAA.…”

“…Выводы авторов были подтверждены в экспериментальном исследовании Nie M.X. [46] на биологической модели аневризмы брюшной аорты у кроликов. Автор установил, что на ранних стадиях развития аневризмы отмечается выраженная воспалительная реакция артериальной стенки, усиливается местная метаболическая активность, повышается значение SUVmax 18 F-ФДГ, а диаметр аневризмы брюшной аорты быстро увеличивается.…”

“…The data on [ 18 F]FDG uptake in AAA are mixed and conflicting. [6][7][8][9] Some studies suggest that increased [ 18 F]FDG uptake positively correlates with AAA progression, [10][11][12] , while others indicate an inverse relationship or lack of correlation between [ 18 F]FDG uptake and aortic size. 13,14 The Sodium Fluoride Imaging of AAA (SoFIA3) trial recently demonstrated that fluorine-18 sodium fluoride AAA uptake (reflecting microcalcification) predicts AAA progression and rupture, providing the first proof-of-concept data for PET/CT as a AAA stratification biomarker 15 ; however, the mechanism remains unclear.…”
