Relationship between frequency spectrum of heart rate variability and autonomic nervous activities during sleep in newborns

Abstract: These results indicate that the autonomic patterns in active and quiet sleep of newborns are different from those in REM and non-REM sleep of adults and may be develop to the autonomic patterns in adults, and that parasympathetic activity is dominant during quiet sleep as compared to active sleep from the results of LFn and HFn in newborns. In addition, in some preterm infants, delayed development of the autonomic nervous system can be determined by classifying the autonomic nervous activity pattern of sleep s… Show more

“…Although all parameters in our study were measured after the newborns were fed, and during the rst 40 minutes of sleep, the HRV measurements could also be dependent on the sleep phase which we did not assess. Namely, the sleep onset in newborns corresponds to a REM phase, one sleep cycle lasts for about [17]. To this end, assessing the phase of sleep in our newborns might be valuable for further interpretation.…”

“…In general, a higher HRV is suggested to be linked to decreased cardiovascular risk and consequently decreased mortality in adults [8][9][10][11], and with well-being and decreased mortality in newborns [12][13][14]. Studies performed in newborns found an increased HRV in term compared to preterm newborns [15][16][17], which might point to a more mature ANS, especially the PNS branch, in terms. It has been reported that PNS develops optimally after 37 weeks of postmenstrual age (PMA) [18,19].…”

“…The load given to the heart has been generally used to indicate the objective intensity placed on the heart. The impulses received by the muscle spindles and joint capsule receptors during muscular activity are transmitted to the heart control receptors in the brain to increase HR ( Takatani et al, 2018 ), and blood returned to the right atrium further increases body temperature and HR.…”
