IntroductionPrevious studies highlight the negative impact of adverse socioeconomic conditions throughout life on motor skills and cognitive health. Factors such as cognitive activity, physical activity, lifestyle, and socioeconomic position significantly affect general health status and brain health. This pilot study investigates the relationships among the Area Deprivation Index (ADI)—a measure of neighborhood-level socioeconomic deprivation, brain structure (cortical volume and thickness), and cognitive status in adults in Arizona. Identifying measures sensitive to ADI could elucidate mechanisms driving cognitive decline.MethodsThe study included 22 adults(mean age = 56.2 ± 15.2) in Arizona, residing in the area for over 10 years(mean = 42.7 ± 15.8). We assessed specific cognitive domains using the NeuroTrax™ cognitive screening test, which evaluates memory, executive function, visual–spatial processing, attention, information processing speed, and motor function. We also measured cortical thickness and volume in 10 cortical regions using FreeSurfer 7.2. Linear regression tests were conducted to examine the relationships between ADI metrics, cognitive status, and brain health measures.ResultsResults indicated a significant inverse relationship between ADI metrics and memory scores, explaining 25% of the variance. Both national and state ADI metrics negatively correlated with motor skills and global cognition (r’s < −0.40, p’s < 0.05). In contrast, ADI metrics generally positively correlated with motor-related volumetric and cortical thickness measures (r’s > 0.40, p’s < 0.05).ConclusionThe findings suggest that neighborhood-level social deprivation might influence memory and motor status, primarily through its impact on motor brain health.

PurposeTo profile the participants using a system of self-organizing maps (SOM) based on their motor and cognitive performance during a dual-task version of the Canadian Agility and Movement Skill Assessment (Cognitive CAMSA).MethodsA total of 169 secondary school students (39.3% girls) volunteered to participate. The original CAMSA, cognitive CAMSA, the Corsi and Digit Span tests were used to assess (a) motor competence, (b) motor competence with cognitive load, and (c) cognitive performance, respectively. SOMs and the k-means clustering algorithm were used to establish the adolescents’ dual-task performance profiles.ResultsIncluding decision making based on verbal and visual cues in the original CAMSA significantly increased the participants’ total scores but also the time required to complete the test, while the skill score remained unchanged. However, not all the participants showed changes in their performance in the same direction during the cognitive CAMSA. Person-centered analyses by SOMs and k-means clustering identified six performance profiles with variations in the cognitive, motor skill, and time scores (H5 = 146.15, H5 = 102.68, and H5 = 108.07, respectively; all p < 0.01).ConclusionThe cognitive CAMSA was shown to be a feasible field-motor test for assessing motor competence with a cognitive load in an ecological setting. Some of the profiles identified in the SOM approach represented adolescents with similar motor and cognitive performance in dual-task or single-task contexts, although other participants obtained high motor competence in single and dual-tasking while their cognitive performance declined or rose more in dual-task than in single task situations. The cognitive CAMSA emerges as a tool of great potential, applicable in educational and sports environments, to know subjects’ characteristics and try to individualize the interventions accordingly with their dual-task profile.

El modo de nacimiento –parto normal frente a cesárea– podría afectar el desarrollo y a la salud futura. La comprensión de estos posibles vínculos podría servir de base para las intervenciones venideras. El objetivo es describir y correlacionar las dimensiones del desarrollo infantil en relación con la motricidad gruesa, fina y el lenguaje en función de la segmentación por el tipo de nacimiento de parto normal y parto por cesárea. La muestra incluía 300 preescolares de entre 4 y 5 años del municipio de Soledad, Colombia. El instrumento utilizado es el TEPSI. Para determinar la correlación entre el tipo de nacimiento y los ámbitos se realizó la prueba de correlación Bivariada de Pearson con p £ 0,01 usando el software SPPS V25.0. El modo de nacimiento por segmentación de cesárea tiene correlación positiva significativa entre coordinación y lenguaje (r = .401; p =.000); coordinación y motricidad (r = .577; p = .000); y entre lenguaje y motricidad (r = .484; p = .000). El modo de nacimiento por segmentación de parto natural tiene una correlación positiva significativa entre lenguaje y motricidad (r = .410; p = .000). El estudio apoya la importancia de conocer el modo de parto y su vinculación con el desarrollo psicomotor, atendiendo a las evidencias de investigaciones previas que alertan de la existencia de efectos negativos para preescolares nacidos por cesárea.
