Relationship between fear of falling and functional status in nursing home residents aged older than 65 years

Abstract: The study found a significant associations between Falls Efficacy Scale score and all of the examined parameters of functional status, the number of falls in the previous year, age and marital status of widower/widow. The major finding was that poor balance and an increase in the number of falls in the previous year are independent factors significantly associated with the fear of falling. “…A recent history of a fall (<1 year ago) has been a strong predictor of the FOF over time among Norwegian older adults in outpatient rehabilitation settings (Jørgensen et al, ) and American community‐dwelling older adults (Dierking, Markides, Al Snih, & Kristen Peek, ). Corroborative cross‐sectional evidence exists among community‐dwelling older Brazilians and Serbians residing in long‐term care settings (Kocic et al, ; Utida, Budib, & Batiston, ). Unfortunately, this study did not have data pertaining to numbers of falls and the degree of injury from falls that occurred in the past year.…”

“…Brazilian participants who were over 76 years had significantly high FOF. Advancing age is a main factor associated with FOF because it is strongly linked to fragility and restriction of certain basic daily activities (Denkinger, Lukas, Nikolaus, & Hauer, ; Kocic et al, ). The discovered importance of advancing age corroborates other Brazilian researchers’ findings (Malini et al, ; Moreira et al, ; Vitorino et al, ).…”
