“…In Poland, in 2005, this pest caused a loss of over 40% of the grain maize cultivation area and the economic losses were estimated at PLN 230 million (Bereś & Konefał, and the references therein). Further grain yield and economic losses, in Poland as well in Europe and USA, can be caused by Fusarium proliferatum and Fusarium subglutinans infection because there is a relationship between European corn borer injuries and occurrence of those fungi with contamination of moniliformin in maize (see Magg, ; Scarpino et al., ). For this reason, there is a growing need for cultivation of European corn borer‐resistant varieties.…”
