The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of Google Classroom, which was used to teach students how to write descriptive text for Junior High School. A quasi-experimental research design used in this study. The participants in this study were students in the eighth grade at SMPN 13 in Palembang. Purposive sampling used to select 60 students for this study. The researchers used a pre-test and post-test method to collect data. The researchers used SPSS to analyze the data and test the hypothesis. When the value of significance (2-tailed) in this study was lower than the significance level (0.000 < 0.05), the Ha was accepted. It means that using Google Classroom had a significant impact on students' achievement in writing descriptive text. However, it can be concluded that Google Classroom significantly enhances the efficiency of teaching students to write descriptive text and assists them in completing and collecting assignments without regard to time or space constraints.

Abstract: A novel is a literature work of fiction which tells about the life of a person and the people around him which are presented in a series of stories that are more complex. A novel can be used as a source of learning for students. This study uses a novel as the source of learning to develop teaching material. This study aims at producing teaching material which describes the setting, characters, and events being told in the novel. This study is a research and development study which uses a 4-D model. The model covers four main stages namely define, design, develop, and disseminate. The teaching material that has been compiled contains activities, steps, exercises, revisions, and peer-assessments in writing descriptive text about setting, characters, and events by using quotations written in the tetralogy of Laskar Pelangi. The activities, steps, and exercises in the teaching material will help the students in writing descriptive text well and detailed.Abstrak: Novel merupakan karya fiksi dengan rangkaian cerita kehidupan seseorang dengan orang lain di sekelilingnya yang ditampilkan lebih kompleks. Novel dapat digunakan sebagai sumber belajar bagi peserta didik. Penelitian ini menggunakan novel untuk mengembangkan bahan ajar sebagai sumber belajar peserta didik. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menghasilkan bahan ajar mendeskripsikan latar dalam novel, menghasilkan bahan ajar mendeskripsikan tokoh dalam novel, dan menghasilkan bahan ajar mendeskripsikan peristiwa dalam novel. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian dan pengembangan dengan menggunakan model pengembangan 4-D, yaitu define (penetapan), design (perancangan), develop (pengembangan), dan disseminate (penyebaran). Bahan ajar yang telah disusun berisi kegiatan, langkah-langkah, latihan, revisi, dan penyuntingan teman sejawat dalam menulis teks deskripsi latar, tokoh, dan peristiwa dengan menggunakan kutipan-kutipan dari novel tetralogi Laskar Pelangi. Kegiatan, langkah-langkah, dan latihan dalam bahan ajar tersebut akan membantu peserta didik dalam menulis teks deskripsi yang baik, benar, dan terperinci.

Low speech skill using Javanese’s Krama Alus in junior high school students led the writers to apply quantum method in learning process. Research and observation on the implementation of learning using Quantum method eventually resulted in a Classroom Action Research with 28 junior high school students as the research subjects. In addition, this research aims at improving students’ skills in giving a speech using Javanese’s Krama Alus. The study was conducted in two cycles; cycle 1 was learning with quantum method in homogeneous student groups (ability) and cycle 2 was learning with quantum methods in heterogeneous groups of students. There were four steps in the research procedure, i.e. action planning, action implementation, observation and reflection. The research data was obtained and collected using two techniques, test and non-test ones. Testing data validity was conducted in two ways; (1) data triangulation and (2) methods triangulation. Then, the data were analyzed by comparative descriptive and analytical critical techniques. The Indicators of action success were (1) Quality of the learning process and (2) Achievement of learning outcomes, in the form of skill in giving a speech using krama alus Javanese. The research data show that there are some developments in each observed cycle, from pre-cycle, cycle 1, and cycle 2. Moreover, the data show an increase in learning motivation (indicator of learning process success), and an increase in learning achievement (as an indicator of learning outcomes achievement). Based on the data and the discussion, it can be concluded that students become skilled at giving a speech using Javanese’ s Krama Alus with the application of quantum learning method.
