Relationship between Diet Quality, Physical Activity and Health-Related Quality of Life in Older Adults: Findings from 2007–2014 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey

Abstract: Background: A growing body of research shows that diet quality and physical activity (PA) are associated with health-related quality of life (HRQOL). However, no study to date has assessed this association using the Healthy Eating Index-2015 as a measure of diet quality. Furthermore, few studies have examined the association between PA dose and HRQOL among a nationally representative sample of older adults. Objectives: To investigate the relationship between diet quality, physical activity, and HRQOL. Design: … Show more

“…Another study conducted among the adult population in the Netherlands also indicated that higher food literacy was positively associated with a healthy diet [ 57 ]. Meanwhile, previous studies have suggested that the adherence to healthy dietary patterns could enhance the health-related quality of life [ 58 , 59 , 60 , 61 ]. Balanced and nutritious diets help to improve health status, reduce the risk of chronic diseases [ 62 , 63 ], and potentially reduce the risk of complications and severe conditions of COVID-19 [ 25 ].…”

“…A first strength of the Healthy Grandparenting Project is that it is the first research project to investigate the impact of providing non-residential grandchild care on levels of physical activity and sedentary behavior, as well as body composition and health-related quality of life. Earlier research focusing on grandparenthood never considered one of these energy-expenditure related behaviors as a primary outcome measure, while it is clear that both physical activity and sedentary behavior are related to health-related quality of life in both the general adult and elderly population [25,44,45]. The inclusion of two age and sex-matched control groups (i.e., the subsamples of non-caregiving grandparents and the nongrandparents) can be considered as a second strength of the Healthy Grandparenting Project, as this enhances the internal validity of our longitudinal study.…”

“…Evidence has shown an association between higher diet quality and healthy ageing (16) , overall health-related quality of life (47) and better physical performance among older adults (19) . A recent analysis from the Nurses' Health Study showed a lower risk of self-reported physical impairment among participants with higher alternative HEI-2010 scores over an 18-year period…”
