Lignite (ulminite reflectance Rr = 0.27%) from the Szczerców deposit (Central Poland) is dominated by huminite group macerals, containing a high proportion of attrinite and densinite. Densinite and ulminite are more abundant in small aromatic units than attrinite, which may result from their stronger gelification. The differences in Raman spectral characteristics between attrinite and ulminite are more pronounced than between attrinite and densinite. Fusinite, in comparison with the huminite group macerals, is composed of larger, more varied aromatic systems. The D4 (1190–1200 cm−1) and D5 bands (1280–1290 cm−1), most likely, correspond to different chemical structures, and their origin should be further investigated.

Raman spectroscopy is a nondestructive and in situ analytical technique that could provide information on the chemical structure and structural ordering of carbonaceous materials. Based on the E2g symmetric stretching vibration mode in the aromatic layers (G band, ~1,580 cm−1) and the defect structure in graphite (D band, ~1,350 cm−1), Raman spectroscopy has been used extensively to characterize the structural features of carbonaceous matters since 1970. Coal is a complex organic compound made up mainly by carbon showing characteristic Raman bands. This article reviews the application of Raman spectroscopy for coal structure characterization under room temperature, to determine its chemical structure, crystallite size, coal rank, and combustion reactivity. Future research for collecting Raman spectra during coal pyrolysis at high temperatures is also discussed. The combination of high‐temperature hot stage with Raman spectroscopy technology allows direct collection of Raman spectra at high temperature.

The 1/3 coking coal, a kind of typical coking coal in the cokemaking process, was used as raw materials in this study. Coal materials were preheated to 200°C, 300°C, 350°C, 380°C, 400°C, and 420°C, respectively, by two ways, one way was putting them at room temperature in a heating furnace and let their temperature rise with the heating of furnace (slow preheating), another way was heating coal with hot gas heated to a certain temperature (quick preheating). The heating rate of coal was about 2-4°C/min in the former way and ranged from 14.40 to 28.44°C/min in a second way. The Raman spectra of coal chars over the range of 800-1800 cm −1 were curve-fitted with 1 structural ordered band (G) and 4 defect bands (D 1 , D 2 , D 3 , D 4 ). In temperature range of 200-350°C, the degree of organization of coal chars raised with increasing temperature and the quick preheating made the carbon structure of coal more disordered than those of raw coal and slow preheated coal chars. When preheated to 380-420°C, the plastic mass emerged in coal bed and the degree of organization of samples under all preheating conditions increased overall.
