Relationship Between Circulating Tumor Cells and Tissue Plasminogen Activator in Patients with Early Breast Cancer

Abstract: Even though the blood coagulation pathway may be activated in more aggressive disease related to an elevated CTC count, in this study, we did not find any association between CTCs and plasma concentrations of tPA.

“…Different types of CTCs cause various degrees of malignancy. Regardless of the number of CTCs, their molecular characteristics and different types may have more critical effects on tumor metastases ( 24 ). Therefore, detection of the CTC molecular characteristics should be useful in predicting metastasis and recurrence of cancers, which in turn would improve the treatment plan.…”

“…recently reported in a US‐based retrospective study that 9% of (metastatic) breast cancer patients experienced CAT with circulating tumor cells detectable, whereas patients without detectable circulating tumor cells had no VTE 77. Discrimination of circulating tumor cells into epithelial or mesenchymal‐like circulating tumor cells in a Slovakian cohort with 116 early breast cancer patients showed no differences, with only one patient with mesenchymal‐like circulating tumor cells eventually developing VTE 78. Therefore, future research directions may include genetic profiling, using RNAseq, of circulating tumor cells, primary and metastatic tumors in patients with and without CAT.…”

“…It is a type I keratin that is part of the cytoskeleton of numerous epithelial cells of different organs, and it is highly expressed in epithelial tumors, being a biomarker for detecting micro- and macro-metastasis in several malignancies [ 24 ]. Moreover, KRT19 has been detected in exosomes derived from colon tumors by RT-PCR [ 26 ] and in circulating breast tumor cells [ 27 ]. CEA is a glycoprotein involved in cell adhesion [ 28 ] and is mainly expressed during fetal development.…”
