“…6 Also in relation to OME, another study in this month's issue investigated the relationship between OME and childhood obesity. 7 The authors found a higher prevalence of obesity in the chronic OME group, highlighting a possible association that warrants further investigation. Recent guidelines recommend a 'watch and wait' policy for neck management in patients with early lip carcinoma in the absence of clinically suspicious cervical lymph nodes.…”

“…A randomised controlled trial assessing the use of oral steroids in OME (the Oral Steroids for the Resolution of Otitis Media with Effusion in Children (‘OSTRICH’) study) is ongoing and the results are eagerly awaited 6 . “…An association between obesity [28][29][30], a high-fat diet (HFD), and OME has been reported [31]. Obese children are more likely to experience OM than normal-weight children, and they have increased chances of recurrent OM.…”

“…Choi et al [29] suggest that a HFD has a close connection with OME, instead of obesity mediating a HFD and OME. Kaya et al [30] state that the prevalence of overweight or obesity is higher in children with chronic OME compared to healthy controls. However, current evidence cannot determine whether overweight or obesity is a risk factor for developing chronic OME, or the opposite is the case.…”

“…17 Previous studies trying to explore the association between childhood obesity and OM suffered from various methodological drawbacks, such as inaccurate definitions of "overweight" and "obesity," 18 body mass index (BMI) data recorded before the onset of OM episodes, but not afterwards, 19 reliance on parents' memory on the frequency of OM episodes, incomplete reports on BMI data, even without actual body/height measurements 11,20 and inconsistent definitions of OM. 21 Thus, conclusions from these studies are both conflicting and questionable.…”
