Relationship between Atherogenic Dyslipidaemia and Lipid Triad and Scales That Assess Insulin Resistance

Abstract: Background: Atherogenic dyslipidaemia (AD) and lipid triad (LT) are characterised by high triglyceride levels together with low HDL and normal or high LDL cholesterol and are favoured by a persistent state of insulin resistance (IR), which increases the release of free fatty acids from abdominal adipose tissue. This alteration in the lipid profile favours the accelerated development of atherosclerosis, which is the most important cause of morbidity and mortality in all countries in the developed and developing… Show more

“…Muscle and adipose tissue, in particular, become less sensitive to glucose and more resistant to insulin as we age [142]. Increasing insulin resistance in the elderly has been linked to abdominal obesity, elevated circulation levels of free fatty acids, and inflammatory markers such as tumor necrosis factors and interleukin 6 [143,144]. Drugs with negative effects on carbohydrate metabolism, such as diuretics, betablockers, and glucocorticoids, also contribute to the onset of hyperglycemia in the elderly.…”

“…El valor predictivo positivo de la medición de miR-33a y miR-122 es útil para identificar a los individuos en riesgo de desarrollar síndrome metabólico y enfermedades cardiovasculares (Huang et al, 2023). Sin embargo, como con otros biomarcadores, el valor predictivo negativo puede ser más bajo, lo que indica que un resultado negativo de la prueba no excluye completamente la presencia de la enfermedad (Paublini et al, 2023).…”

“…Another surrogate marker is the triglyceride-to-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (TG/HDL-C) ratio, a simple indicator of IR that is strongly associated with HOMA-IR [ 17 , 18 ]. The most recently proposed measure of IR is the metabolic score for IR (METS-IR), which has been used as a new surrogate marker for IR because of its association with the development of type 2 diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease, dyslipidemia, and hyperuricemia [ 19 , 20 , 21 , 22 ].…”
