Relationship between air pollution and positivity of RA-related autoantibodies in individuals without established RA: a report on SERA

Abstract: Introduction Studies suggest that respiratory exposures including smoking, proximity to traffic and air pollution might be associated with development of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). RA-related autoantibodies are predictive of the development of RA. Objective We evaluated the relationship between RA-related autoantibodies and exposure to particulate matter (PM), a measure of air pollution of interest to health, in individuals without RA. Methods The Studies of the Etiology of Rheumatoid Arthritis (SERA) is a… Show more

“…However, the findings have been mixed, perhaps in part due to the complexity of assessing the true exposure to air pollution as well as accounting for other factors such as specific components of pollution that may vary by locality. In addition, these findings are likely affected by confounders such as increased lower socioeconomic status, a purported risk factor for RA in its own right, in individuals who are also exposed to greater amounts of pollution (6975). …”

“…Cigarette smoking leads to increased expression of PAD and protein citrullination in the bronchoalveolar lavage cells of smokers without arthritis 137 . Additionally, PAD polymorphisms, such as PADI4, have been shown to predispose male smokers to developing RA 138 . ACPAs and rheumatoid factor have also been found in induced sputa of patients with early-stage RA 139 .…”

“…This association appears to be cigarette smoking specific since non-smoking particulate matter (i.e. a measure of air pollution) was not associated with increased risk of progression to RA in asymptomatic seropositive patients [61]. …”
