The distribution and accumulation of heavy metals in the sediments, especially those nearest of wastewater discharges of south of Spain, were investigated. Sediment samples from 14 locations were collected and characterised for metal content (e.g. Ni, Cu, Zn, Cr, Pb, Mn, Cd and Hg), organic carbon, total nitrogen, total phosphorous, n-hexane-extractable material, carbonates and grain size. Concentration data were processed using correlation analysis and factor analysis. The correlation analysis of concentrations data showed important positive correlations among organic carbon, total phosphorus, Cu, Zn, Cd and Hg, otherwise weak correlations among Mn, Cr, Ni and CO(3) (2-), indicating that these metals have complicated geochemical behaviours. The use of statistical factor analysis also confirmed these results. Sediments pollution assessment was carried out using geoaccumulation and metal pollution indexes (MPI(8)). The results revealed that sediments of Cádiz bay and Sancti Petri channel were uncontaminated with the studied metals.

Sediments of a polluted reservoir were evaluated for total contents of Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn along with their different geochemical forms (exchangeable, carbonate, Fe-Mn, organic matter and residual). Mineralogy of the sediments and physico-chemical parameters i.e. pH, OC and percentage of sand, silt and clay were also evaluated to see the dependency of heavy metals concentration on these parameters. The total concentration of heavy metals in the sediments varied according to sites and seasons. Except for station H1 which had moderately higher concentration of Cu (45.5 mg kg -1 ), concentrations of all other metals at all the sites under study were below the standard shale value. Maximum proportions of all metals were associated with the carbonate and residual fractions. The Risk Assessment Code showed a low risk for Cr, Ni and Zn, and a medium risk for Cu at station H3 and H4. On the basis of freshwater sediment quality guidelines, there is a strong possibility of Cr and Cu toxicity for aquatic biota of the reservoir. The data were further processed using Pearson's correlation and factor analysis to obtain more accurate information about the behaviour of these metals. A positive relationship among the metals confirmed the anthropogenic sources of pollution in the reservoir. Significant positive relationships of heavy metals with the texture of the sediment were also obtained.

Behaviour of REEs in a tropical estuary and adjacent continental shelf of southwest coast of India: Evidence from anomalies

The distribution and accumulation of the rare earth elements (REE) in the sediments of the Cochin Estuary and adjacent continental shelf were investigated. The rare earth elements like La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, Lu and the heavy metals like Mg, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Cu, Zn, U, Th were analysed by using standard analytical methods. The Post-Archean Australian Shale composition was used to normalise the rare earth elements. It was found that the sediments were more enriched with the lighter rare earth elements than the heavier ones. The positive correlation between the concentrations of REE, Fe and Mn could explain the precipitation of oxyhydroxides in the study area. The factor analysis and correlation analysis suggest common sources of origin for the REEs. From the Ce-anomalies calculated, it was found that an oxic environment predominates in all stations except the station No. 2. The Eu-anomaly gave an idea that the origin of REEs may be from the feldspar. The parameters like total organic carbon, U/Th ratio, authigenic U, Cu/Zn, V/Cr ratios revealed the oxic environment and thus the depositional behaviour of REEs in the region.
