The variation in the mass fraction of crystalline cellulose (crystallinity of wood), the intrinsic crystallinity of cellulose, and the thickness of cellulose crystallites in early wood of Norway spruce [Picea abies (L.) Karst.], and Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) grown in Finland were studied using wide angle X-ray scattering and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The mass fraction of crystalline cellulose in wood increased slightly with the distance from the pith and was about 30€4% in mature wood of both species. The crystallinity of cellulose and the thickness of cellulose crystallites were almost constant for both species. The crystallinity of cellulose was 52€3% for both species and the average thickness of the cellulose crystallites was 32€1 and 31€1 for Norway spruce and Scots pine, respectively. The mass fraction of cellulose in wood, calculated from the crystallinity values, increased with the distance from the pith for both species.

Forty young trees from a stand of maritime pine in the southern mountains of Galicia, Spain (42°21 0 N: 8°01 0 W) were felled to obtain the material required for studying density and shrinkage in clear and small wood specimens. The wood ranged from light to moderately heavy, and the dimensions remained reasonably stable with varying moisture content. The results were consistent with those obtained in previous studies of adult trees, except for axial shrinkage, which was very high and variable in this study. The between-tree variation in wood properties was high considering that the sampled trees came from the same stand. However, the relationships between density and height in the stem were similar in all trees. A general model for the prediction of volumetric shrinkage was developed, with oven-dry density and ring width as predictor variables. The model is feasible for estimation of wood quality in living trees. It is applicable to tree selection for thinning and for genetic improvement of stock.Résumé Propriétés physiques du bois d'éclaircies de pin maritime (Pinus pinaster Ait.). Des pièces en bois, petites et sans défauts, provenant de 40 jeunes pins maritimes d 0 un peuplement des montagnes du Sud de la Galicie, Espagne (42°21 0 N, 8°01 0 W), ont été testées. Le bois analysé était léger à demi-lourd et de dimensions relativement stables face aux variations d 0 humidité. Leurs propriétés: densité et rétractibilité correspondent aux données citées pour les arbres adultes; toutefois, la rétractibilité axiale est très élevée et possède une très grande dispersion. La variation des propriétés entre arbres est très significative; même entre les arbres qui procédaient d 0 un même peuplement. Par ailleurs, les relations entre les variables densité et hauteur sur la grume sont très similaires pour toutes les grumes. Un modèle est proposé en vue d 0 estimer la rétractibilité volumétrique, à partir de la densité et de la largeur de cerne. Le modèle permet de déterminer la qualité du bois dans des arbres vivants en utilisant comme critère de sélection des sujets dans les éclaircies et dans l 0 amélioration génétique.

-Shrinkage at the tissue level has been evaluated satisfactorily using relatively simple equipment, comprising an optical microscope equipped with reflected light, a standard objective, a water immersion objective of same magnification and a digital camera connected to a computer. Shrinkage is calculated from pairs of images taken at the same magnification, one collected during immersion in water and the other in air-dry state. A novel software program has been developed to determine shrinkage based on a closed chain of reference points chosen from the anatomical markers at the external part of the zone of interest. Measurements were performed on earlywood, latewood and compression wood zones from two softwood species (Douglas fir and spruce), isolated from the rest of the annual ring with the aid of a diamond wire saw. As main results, reference should be made to the low degree of shrinkage and high anisotropy factor of earlywood, the marked and practically isotropic shrinkage in latewood and the low shrinkage (with respect to cell wall thickness) and inverse anisotropy ratio in compression wood.image analysis / microscope / shrinkage / softwood / tissue Résumé -Mesure du retrait libre à l'échelle des tissus à l'aide d'un microscope optique muni d'un objectif à immersion : résultats obtenus chez le Douglas (Pseudotsuga menziesii) et l'épicéa (Picea abies). Le retrait est déterminé par comparaison de deux images : l'une obtenue en immersion dans l'eau et l'autre à l'état sec à l'air. Un logiciel nouveau a été développé pour extraire le retrait à partir d'une chaîne fermée de points situés à la périphérie de la zone d'intérêt. Les mesures ont été effectuées sur des zones de bois initial, de bois de compression et de bois final de deux espèces (Douglas et sapin). Ces zones sont isolées du reste de l'accroissement initial à l'aide d'une scie à fil diamanté. Les principaux résultats montrent le faible niveau de retrait et la forte anisotropie du bois initial, le fort retrait, presque isotrope, du bois final et la faible valeur, en rapport à sa densité, avec une anisotropie inversée, du bois de compression.analyse d'image / microscope / résineux / retrait / tissu
