Relations between Agri-Environmental, Economic and Social Dimensions of Farms’ Sustainability

Abstract: Attempts to measure sustainability of farms are usually based on indicators of a set of sustainability dimensions. According to the literature, analyses should (but quite often do not) cover not only the level, but also the relations between the sustainability dimensions, because we could expect complementarity, synergies or competition between the sustainability goals. The aim of this paper was to measure and assess the interdependencies between dimensions of farms’ sustainability. The research was carried ou… Show more

“…The reason for this might be that efforts made to improve the economic side of life reduce the amount of free time and might cause stress. This goes in line with the possible conflict between social and economic dimensions of sustainable development described in the literature [149]. Simultaneously, our analyses show a positive correlation between both endogenous variables used in the structural model, that is, living conditions and economic situation, which is quite understandable.…”

“…The result that the experts mentioned social and environmental potentials more often than economic ones could be interpreted as a trade-off between the sustainability dimensions. Other authors such as Sulewski et al [71] also describe such a trade-off. They state that reaching a high degree of sustainability in one dimension, leads to a lower degree of sustainability in the other dimensions.…”

“…This approach is known in the literature as weak sustainability [23,24]. Bachev [13] and Sulewski et al [26] defined the sustainability of farming enterprises as the ability of farms to maintain their economic, social, and ecological functions over the long term. According to Harris and Goodwin [27], the basic premise of the concept of sustainable development is the conviction that it is necessary to maintain a balance (sustainability) in the three elements of the macrosystem: the economy, the environment, and the social system.…”
