Purpose This study aims to identify the role of innovation research in formulating the intellectual structure of the hospitality and tourism literature by performing a bibliometric analysis. Design/methodology/approach In total, 6,255 journal articles on innovation were gathered from Scopus and analyzed using co-citation, bibliographic coupling and thematic content analyses. The most influential articles were also carefully read to reveal a nomological network of innovation research in hospitality and tourism scholarship. Findings Co-citation analysis reveals that there are six significant clusters in the field of innovation research. Various philosophical underpinnings might be used in different circumstances, with actor-network and Schumpeterian theory playing significant roles. A review of current works using bibliographic coupling reveals five interesting emerging research areas and makes numerous recommendations for when to conduct more studies. A review of influential articles displayed differences between the co-citation and bibliographic coupling analysis findings and produced a framework for further investigation of the knowledge field. Originality/value This paper is among the first integrative reviews on innovation research in hospitality and tourism by quantitatively reviewing published articles and qualitatively reviewing the content of the most influential studies.

This paper aims to re‐evaluate the customer experience literature in the hospitality and tourism (H&T) domain by employing a paradox lens and constructing a model for future research direction and practitioners. Using two co‐citation analysis methods—a hierarchical cluster analysis and a multidimensional scaling analysis—to investigate 312 customer experience papers from the leading H&T journals with 22.124 citations over the 44‐year period (1987–2021), we identified five knowledge foundations that have made up the intellectual structure of customer experience in H&T: experiential consumption, authenticity, memorability, place branding, and service. This result reveals the dualistic representations of the paradoxical character of customer experience including authentic/fantastical, structured/unstructured, branded/ecological, and bubbled/exposed. Based on this finding, this study developed a framework for scholars and marketers to reveal different approaches to managing the tensions between paradoxes.

Purpose Modern businesses strategically focus on improving the online purchase experience (OPE) of customers to acquire a long-term competitive edge. However, the intellectual knowledge structure of OPE research remains uncharted, necessitating further investigation. This study aims to provide a concise synthesis of the evolution, trends and advancements of consumers’ OPE research using bibliometrics. Design/methodology/approach Firstly, the authors inventorised the relevant OPE literature, and then the bibliometric trends and the domain’s performance (top articles, outlets and authors) were analysed and illustrated through tables and narratives. Secondly, science mapping tools (such as co-occurrence) and visualisation strategy were deployed to pinpoint relevant OPE research themes and highlight the domain’s intellectual structure. Findings The most significant findings concern the most prolific authors, outlets, most cited articles and five thematic clusters forming the ground for potential future research paths. Also, these thematic clusters depicted the intellectual knowledge structure that emerged from the OPE research domain. Research limitations/implications This review may be helpful for future academic researchers to identify future research paths in the domain and practitioners to help make policy decisions while formulating and articulating their marketing strategy. Originality/value Deploying the VOSviewer and Bibliometrix-R software together, this review is most likely the first attempt to the best of the authors’ knowledge to provide a thorough bibliometric synthesis of the OPE research domain.
