“…This pattern of higher correlation for worse eyes may reflect the fact that a substantial proportion of our patient cohort had MS, which is a disorder that frequently produces subtle loss of function and axonal loss even in eyes with 20/20 or better visual acuity and no history of acute optic neuritis. 1,31,32 Among patients with disorders other than MS in this study, correlations with NEI-VFQ-25 and NEI-VFQ-25 ϩ Supplement scores were greater for better eyes (r s ϭ 0.38 vs r s ϭ 0.31 for worse eyes for both questionnaires).…”

“…Patients who were evaluated by neuro-ophthalmologists in the Department of Neurology at the University of Pennsylvania were invited to participate. The Pennsylvania neuro-ophthalmology group follows a large cohort of patients with MS 31,32 and patients with a variety of other conditions that are associated with afferent and efferent visual dysfunction. Disease-free control subjects included staff and family members of patients who participated in this study and who had binocular visual acuities of 20/20 or better.…”

“…The individual relationship between RGC neuroaxonal loss or VEP latency delay with worsening LCVA has been demonstrated previously 14, 15, 24, 27, 38, 39. However, the associations found in our study were generally stronger, possibly due to the use of asymmetry analysis, which eliminates the effect of intersubject variability.…”

“…OCT measurement of inner retinal layers (including the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) has been validated as an accurate measure on axonal loss in anterior visual pathway and has been extensively applied to the investigation of MS 14, 15, 16, 17, 18. Thinning of the RNFL identifies retrograde axonal degeneration following damage to the optic nerve or the optic tract, providing an opportunity to quantitatively assess axonal damage associated with ON.…”

“…However, MS patients with unaffected or mildly affected eyes frequently reported inadequate quality of vision in the present study. Other authors have attempted to correlate visual findings in MS and, except for patients with clearly affected eyes, no important correlation has been described [20][21][22][23] . In fact, the common conclusion is that MS patients have more visual complaints and a variety of ophthalmological abnormalities that warrant comprehensive examination.…”
