Relation of Red Cell Distribution Width With CHA2DS2-VASc Score in Patients With Nonvalvular Atrial Fibrillation

Abstract: Our study results indicate that RDW values are significantly correlated with CHA2DS2-VASc score in nonanemic patients with AF, while also being independent predictor of high CHA2DS2-VASc score.

“…9,11,12 Many studies have shown a correlation between higher RDW values and prognosis, but these studies were about cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, chronic renal failure, liver disease, pancreatitis and venous thromboembolism. [13][14][15][16][17] Kurt et al showed a correlation of nonvalvular atrial fibrillation and higher RDW values in 320 patients. 13 Demir et al conducted a study of 37 patients with cerebral sinus thrombosis and 101 patients with primary headache with a total of 138 patients.…”

“…Recently, a series of clinical experiments have revealed that an increased RDW is an independent predictive factor of poor prognosis for cardiovascular diseases, such as cardiac failure, coronary heart disease and AF [21,22,23,24,25,26]. Kurt et al [14] discovered that high RDW is an independent predictive factor for a high CHA 2 DS 2 -VASc score, while Lee et al [13] found that the CHA 2 DS 2 -VASc score and the occurrence rate of ischemic stroke increase with an increase in RDW. It can be seen that high RDW is associated with an increased risk of AF embolism.…”

“…Some factors, such as age, hypertension and stroke, can be treated as predictors for evaluating the risks of thromboembolism and bleeding in patients with AF [2]. There has been research reporting that RDW can serve as an index to evaluate the risk of thromboembolism in patients with AF [14]; however, studies regarding the correlation between RDW and bleeding risk in patients with AF are lacking at present. Therefore, this research aimed to probe into the possibility of treating RDW as a reference index to evaluate the bleeding risk in nonvalvular AF (NVAF) patients who take dabigatran after catheter ablation.…”
