Relation of DDE and PBB serum levels in farm residents, consumers, and Michigan Chemical Corporation employees.

Abstract: Results of serum PBB determinations on 524 Michigan diary farm residents and consumers of products from the farms, 55 chemical workers, and 56 Wisconsin farm residents are reported. Mean and median values were highest for the chemical workers, followed by consumers from and residents of quarantined and nonquarantined farms. Serum DDE was higher among chemical workers, but was similar for all other groups. Statistical analysis of serum of PPB and serum DDE levels was done with respect to quarantine status, age,… Show more

“…Mean serum PBB values, depicted in Table 1 and ranked graphically (Figs. 1 and 2) ranged lower for family groups resident on nonquarantined farms April 1978 than for quarantined farm families. Family clustering of serum PBB is suggested by the standard deviation from the mean family value, which tended to fall within a limited range such that the highest values did not overlap lower values.…”

“…PBB contamination of dairy farms in Michigan occurred as an episode of relatively short duration, primarily since 1973. The major route of exposure to PBB was probably by ingestion of contaminated food and indeed, significantly different serum PBB values have been found among dairy farm residents of quarantined and nonquarantined farms (1). Presumably, animal food sources from quarantined farms would tend to represent a more concentrated exposure source.…”

“…Males tended to have a higher prevalence of cigarette smoking, and when they smoked, did so more heavily. Wolff et al (11) found serum PBB concentrations to be higher among males tested. Further, as demonstrated here, serum PBB affects CEA titer and is additive to the effect of smoking.…”

“…Serum analytical methodology is described elsewhere (20). Since individual pure isomers were not available for calibration, analysis of component peaks was accomplished by calculating relative peak areas, setting the major 2,4,5,2',4',5'-hexabromobiphenyl peak at 100%.…”
