“…Despite the significant correlation of clay with soil chemical characteristics reported on the local scale, e.g., [20,21], the relationship among these factors was significantly weaker in our study (Table 4 and Figure S4). Clay content was significantly increased owing to the comprehensive influence of climate, parent material, and soil formation factors on the regional scale, which is beneficial to the protection of SOM from decomposition by adsorption and aggregation, slowing turnover and effectively increasing SOC [19,26,41].
