Objective The increasing interest for the Pickering emulsions is based on the possibility to replace classical emulsifiers by the solid particles. This approach is extremely attractive for the cosmetic field. But, the main difficulty is to obtain stable emulsions with appreciable skin feel. However, there is no information about the texture of such systems. The aim of this study is to formulate and describe the textural properties of cosmetic Pickering emulsions compared with conventional systems. Methods Three metal oxides were selected: titanium dioxide, zinc oxide and silicon dioxide, able to form stable and totally emulsified systems. A conventional emulsifier was used to formulate the emulsion of reference. Finally, the mixture of two emulsifying systems, combining both, surfactant and particles, was also studied. Then, a sensory panel was asked to quantify the intensities of the perception of the seven discriminating attributes. Results Each particle brought its properties to the textural perception of the emulsion. TiO2 particles ensured the whitening effect of the emulsions, SiO2 provided the screech residue, whereas ZnO gave intermediate results. The conventional surfactant was perceived as glossy, greasy and more difficult to spread. The particle/surfactant mixtures gave mostly in‐between results. Conclusions The study shows that the sensory profile of Pickering emulsions is indirectly and directly governed by the particle properties used for the emulsion stabilization: indirectly, through affecting the emulsion orientation (oil in water or water in oil), the droplet organization and viscosity, and directly, through the particle perception on the skin surface.

In the present work, the polymer matrix is comprised of Polyvinyl alcohol and natural polymer starch with the addition of an absorbent clay bentonite. These were effectively blended followed by reinforcement in the form of gold, silver, and zinc oxide nanoparticles. Films were prepared and the dispersion of the nanoparticles was studied by scanning electron microscopy and ultraviolet spectroscopy. The mechanical properties and thermal stability of such nanocomposites as compared to the polymeric blend was studied and an enhancement in properties was observed. Furthermore the use of PVA, bentonite and these nanoparticles in facial masks led to the investigation of cosmetic applications of the polymer nanocomposites thus prepared. This composition was found to be stable in face masks for a period of 12 weeks and reported no irritation when applied to the skin.

Objective: The use of polymers in the field of cosmetics has been popularized due to its properties of film-forming, emulsifiers, thickeners, rheology modifiers, stimuli-responsive agents, etc. The present work deals with the synthesis of polymer nanocomposites that has been incorporated into a base face mask formulation at a loading of 1% and subsequently studied for sensory attributes, primary skin irritancy and physical stability tests. Methods: The polymer nanocomposites were synthesised by the solution casting method and were incorporated in the base face mask formulation. Sensory evaluation was done using a ten member expert panel and the results were tabulated. The physical stability test was carried out at different storage conditions and the colour, odour, pH, viscosity and appearance were analysed using standard techniques. Results: The polymer nanocomposites were found to be stable in the face mask formulations for a period of 12 weeks. The sensory evaluation tests showed higher or equivalent results on most of the sensory parameters. The formulation showed no skin irritancy. Conclusion: The sensory and physical stability of the face mask formulation with the prepared polymer blend nanocomposite shows comparable and an equivalent match with base face mask formulation and also no irritation was found on using the face masks.

Abstract: It was shown that a description of chosen sensory attributes can be responsibly carried out by rheological measurements, that is through the attained numerical values of the parameters appearing in a proposed empirical model characterizing shear viscosity of body lotions.
