The relationship between muscle strength and bone mineral density illustrates the positive effect of mechanical loading on bone. But local and systemic factors may affect both muscle and bone tissues. This study investigated the effects of long-term tennis playing on the relationship between lean tissue mass and bone mineral content in the forearms, taking the body dimensions into account. Fifty-two tennis players (age 24.2 +/- 5.8 yrs, 16.2 +/- 6.1 yrs of practice) were recruited. Lean tissue mass (LTM), bone area, bone mineral content (BMC), and bone mineral density were measured at the forearms from a DXA whole-body scan. Grip strength was assessed with a dynamometer. A marked side-to-side difference (p < 0.0001) was found in favor of the dominant forearm in all parameters. Bone area and BMC correlated with grip strength on both sides (r = 0.81-0.84, p < 0.0001). The correlations were still significant after adjusting for whole-body BMC, body height, or forearm length. This result reinforced the putative role of the muscles in the mechanical loading on bones. In addition, forearm BMC adjusted to LTM or grip strength was higher on the dominant side, suggesting that tennis playing exerts a direct effect on bone.

The present study aimed to examine various factors aff ecting the bone mass of female university students. An ultrasound bone assessment device was used to measure the bone mass of the right calcaneal (heel) bone of 285 female university students. The subjects were asked to complete a questionnaire on the type and amount of time they spent practicing sports while attending elementary, junior, and senior high school and university as well as on milk and natto (fermented soybean) consumption and age at menarche to determine their associations with bone mass. Furthermore, the relationship between sports experience, intensity, and history of the subjects to bone mass was examined. We classifi ed sports into high-and low-impact groups according to the type of sport played to examine the eff ects of impact on bone mass. We found the strongest correlation between bone mass and the amount of time spent practicing sports while attending senior high school. No correlation was found between bone mass and age at menarche and milk or natto consumption. From the relationship between sports experience and bone mass, we found that bone mass was signifi cantly higher in the group with sports experience while attending junior and senior high school and university. In the assessment of sports intensity and bone mass, we found a signifi cantly higher bone mass in those who played high-impact sports than in those who played low-impact sports. We also examined the eff ects of continued practice of sports on bone mass and found that more sports experience had a greater eff ect of increasing bone mass. Exercising while attending junior and senior high school had the highest infl uence on bone mass, which suggests that the long-term, continued practice of highimpact sports during this period allows a high bone mass to be obtained.
