Relation between green area duration and grain yield in some varieties of spring wheat.

Abstract: Spring wheat cv. Opal, Orca and Gaby, sown in 1967-8 on various dates at different seed rates or with different levels of N and chlormequat, were assessed for green area of leaves, internodes and ears. Green-area duration (D) for flag leaf and for peduncle were closely correlated with grain yield, the combined value for the 2 parameters accounting for 81 and 61% of the variance in grain yield in the 2 years, respectively. Including all the values of D in a multiple correlation increased the predictive value to… Show more

“…Lupton et al (II) showed flag leaf area duration and rate of ear growth in area to be the most important characters determining wheat yield. A close correlation between grain yield and green area duration of the flag leaf and peduncle was reported by Spiertz et al (13) in spring wheat. Application of N increased the leaf area duration of wheat according to Khalifa (8) and Langer and Liew (10).…”

“…3 b). In this respect these results are similar to those reported for cereals where grain yield has often been found to be strongly correlated with green area duration after anthesis (Wellbank et al 1966;Spiertz, ten Hag & Kupers, 1971). Hebblethwaite (1982) also found a strong correlation between seed yield and total LAD for crops of field beans with small values of maximum >Jeaf area index.…”

“…These results strongly support Evans (1975) who found, after reviewing work done in widely different environments that about half the variation in yield due to climate, agronomic practice and variety is accounted for by variation in LAD after anthesis. Various other authors have also found a close relationship between yield and LAD after anthesis (Simpson, 1968;Puckridge, 1971 andSpiertz, ten Hag &Kupers, 1971). An explanation for this relationship is that under most circumstances, 90 -95070 of the carbohydrates in grain is derived from carbon dioxide fIXation after anthesis (Evans, 1975).…”
