“…1 Two European studies documented a positive association between high BP and cataract. 22,23 In the Blue Mountain Eye Study, antihypertensive medication use was associated with cataract and cataract surgery. 39 The mechanism linking hypertension and cataract is not clear.…”

“…A few studies have reported associations of hightriglyceride or low-HDL levels with cataract among specific subpopulations. 12,22,42 Paunskinis et al 22 reported a positive association between high triglyceride levels and any cataract subtype among women aged 45 to 64 years. In the Beaver Dam Eye Study, low HDL levels were associated with cortical cataract in women.…”

“…Finally, obesity is potentially linked to ARC secondary to its comorbid cardiometabolic conditions, including diabetes [6], dyslipidemia [7], and hypertension [8], which themselves are known risk factors of ARC [9,10]. The metabolic syndrome, a condition characterized by the following 5 components: central obesity, hyperglycemia, hypertriglyceridemia, hypertension, and reduced serum high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, has been associated with different types of ARC [11,12,13]. Therefore, it has been suggested that the association of ARC is stronger with central obesity than with general obesity [14].…”

“…8 Similarly, Paunksnis et al reported increased odds of cataract formation in middle-aged females with arterial hypertension, obesity and hypertriglyceridemia. 9 Diabetes and hyperglycemia are known to promote the glycation of lens proteins and the hyperosmotic effects of sorbitol on lens fibers through the aldose reductase pathway. 10 Leptin has been shown to be involved in cataract formation.…”
