Relating Environmental, Social, and Governance scores and sustainability performances of firms: An empirical analysis

Abstract: Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) scores can act as an indicator for sustainability performance of organizations. This paper explores an empirical evidence for the relationship binding ESG scores and sustainability performances of firms. “…To test the moderating role of industry in H4, we add the interaction between the interlocks measure and a dummy variable indicating if firms belong to the more environmentally impacting industries ( More Environmentally Impacting ) to our model. Moderation is widely used in environmental studies, such as Cordeiro et al (2020); Qureshi et al (2020); Rajesh and Rajendran (2020); Ren, He, Zhang, and Chen (2019); Wijethilake and Upadhaya (2020). Thus, our model becomes the following: italicGHG0.25emEmissons Intensityit=β0+β1Interlock Measureit+β2More Environmentally Impactingi++β3Interlock Measureit*More Environmentally Impactingi+β4italicControls+k=19λkitalicYear+μit, where the interlock measure is one of the four measures: (a) Total Interlocks , (b) Same Industry Interlocks , (c) Cross Industry Interlocks , and (d) Interlocks with Leaders.…”

“…Manufacturing industries play a noteworthy role in the industrial development of a country. To ensure sustainable industrial development, it is important to understand the interdependencies between industry and the environment, economy, and society (Rajesh and Rajendran, 2020; Rajesh, 2020; van Loon and van Wassenhove, 2018; Zhu, 2016). Of these three major areas of impact (environmental, social, and economic), environmental issues have recently received more attention by practitioners and researchers (Acquaye et al, 2018; Caniato, Caridi, Crippa, & Moretto, 2012; Ding, Zhao, An, & Tang, 2016; Kalverkamp & Young, 2019; Koberg & Longoni, 2019).…”

“…The CHap calculation would help people to make consumption decision at a personal level, there is also the indicator calculation considering EIs for the organization. For instance, Rajesh and Rajendran ( 2020 ) induced the Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) scores as an indicator for the sustainability performance of organizations. It contributed to investigating the potential negative impacts of economic activities on environments.…”
