Background Inadequate nutrient intake is a common problem in the introduction of complementary feeding (CF), which can impair healthy infant growth. Methods To analyze nutrient intake in infants submitted to three different CF methods, it was conducted a randomized clinical trial comparing complementary feeding methods in mother-infant pairs. The mothers received at 5.5 months of the child an intervention on one of three distinct CF methods: (A) strict Parent-Led Weaning (PLW); (B) strict Baby-Led Introduction to SolidS (BLISS); and (C) a mixed method. The pairs were followed up at nine months, and 12–17 months of age. Food consumption was assessed by a 24-h dietary recall at nine and 12–17 months. Quantile regression was used to estimate the differences between the groups in nutrient intake. The research was approved by the Ethics Committee. Results A total of 127 infants were evaluated at nine months and 113 at 12–17 months. Mostly, PLW, BLISS, and mixed CF methods provided similar amounts of macronutrients and micronutrients. At nine months, infants randomized to the Mixed method had higher vitamin B9 intake compared to the other methods (p = 0.049). Infants fed by mixed method consumed significantly fewer carbohydrates (p = 0.033) and less total fiber (p < 0.001) at 12 and 17 months. Conclusions Infants following PLW, BLISS, or mixed showed predominantly similar amounts of nutrient intake. Trial registration: The trial was registered in the Brazilian Registry of Clinical Trials (ReBEC) with identifier [RBR-229scm U1111-1226-9516], [https://ensaiosclinicos.gov.br/rg/RBR-229scm]. The full data of the first registration was on 24/09/2019.

Introdução: A amamentação promove benefícios, tanto para o recém nascido, quanto para a mãe. Apesar da importância do aleitamento materno, há dificuldades peculiares para a mãe e o bebê no período de internação, podendo levar ao desmame precoce. Objetivo: Verificar a relação entre aleitamento e os reflexos na motricidade orofacial. Metodologia: A busca por artigos científicos foi conduzida por dois pesquisadores independentes nas bases de dados MEDLINE (Pubmed), LILACS, SciELO, SCOPUS, WEB OF SCIENCE e BIREME, sem restrição de idioma e localização, durante o período de 2010 a 2021. Para complementar e evitar viés de risco foi realizada uma busca por literatura cinza no Google Scholar. A revisão sistemática foi conduzida conforme as recomendações do Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA). Foram inclusos na pesquisa estudos que obtiveram pontuação ≥ a 12 pontos segundo o protocolo para pontuação qualitativa proposto por Pithon et al. (2015). Resultados: A duração do aleitamento materno associou-se positivamente à qualidade da função mastigatória. Os estudos mostraram que a amamentação tem um impacto positivo na função mastigatória e de sucção. Conclusão: Ao relacionar os achados desta pesquisa com o desmame precoce e seus reflexos no sistema estomatognático evidencia-se que o aleitamento materno natural oferece ao bebê um adequado desenvolvimento ósseo e muscular, garantindo, assim, o perfeito funcionamento das estruturas orais e possibilitando saúde geral devido às interrelações existentes entre o sistema estomatognático e os demais órgãos e funções.

Iron is an important micronutrient required for a number of biological processes including oxygen transport, cellular respiration, the synthesis of nucleic acids and the activity of key enzymes. The World Health Organization has recognised iron deficiency as the most common nutritional deficiency globally and as a major determinant of anaemia. Iron deficiency anaemia affects 40% of all children between the ages of 6 and 59 months, 37% of mothers who are pregnant and 30% of women between the ages of 15 and 49 years worldwide. Dietary iron exists in two main forms known as haem iron and non‐haem iron. Haem iron is obtained from animal sources such as meat and shows higher bioavailability than non‐haem iron, which can be obtained from both plant and animal sources. Different components in food can enhance or inhibit iron absorption from the diet. Components such as meat proteins and organic acids increase iron absorption, while phytate, calcium and polyphenols reduce iron absorption. Iron levels in the body are tightly regulated since both iron overload and iron deficiency can exert harmful effects on human health. Iron is stored mainly as haemoglobin and as iron bound to proteins such as ferritin and hemosiderin. Iron deficiency affects individuals at increased risk due to factors such as age, pregnancy, menstruation and various diseases. Different solutions for iron deficiency are applied at individual and community levels. Iron supplements and intravenous iron can be used to treat individuals with iron deficiency, while various types of iron‐fortified foods and biofortified crops can be employed for larger communities. Foods such as rice, flour and biscuits have been used to prepare fortified iron products. However, it is important to ensure the fortification process does not exert significant negative effects on organoleptic properties and the shelf life of the food product.
