Rejuvenation of the neck with liposuction and ancillary techniques

Abstract: An aesthetically pleasing neck is an important component of physical appearance and a frequently targeted area for a variety of rejuvenative procedures. In appropriately selected patients, liposuction of the neck using tumescent local anesthesia can effectively render a more youthful appearance to the anterior and lateral neck by removing superficial adipose tissue and redraping the skin. This article will review all aspects of neck liposuction, including neck and lower face anatomy, proper patient selection a… Show more

“…Proper compression after liposuction is of great importance. When liposuction of the inferior jowl is performed, the skin is manually tented to avoid rasping the mandible and minimize risk of any blunt trauma to the marginal mandibular nerve . We find that superficial liposuction is best achieved in optimal head and neck positioning, with the chin up.…”

“…In older adults and obese individuals, there is submental fat accumulation and skin laxity, leading to an increase in the cervicomental angle . Typically, there is softening of the mandibular contours, and the anterior borders of the sternocleidomastoid muscle are less pronounced.…”

“…2A,B). The smaller cannula size used for lipolysis may facilitate fat melting in fibrous locations without the additional trauma experienced with larger sized cannulas of standard liposuction, (2) It is ideal in revision surgeries where small areas of adiposity may not have been completely removed via previous lipoplasty or other body contouring procedures, (3) Lipoma removal [18], (4) Combining modalities such as combining fractional carbon dioxide laser resurfacing and laser lipolysis of the submental region to enhance neocollagenesis and skin tightening internally as well as externally [18], (5) Cellulite reduction using laser lipolysis have been documented [15]. The author used to do superficial liposuction with small cannula and low voltage laser skin tightening with the aim to improve cellulite in some patients.…”

“…Ultrasonic-and laser-assisted lipolysis are advocated by some authors but are not universally accepted to be superior to conventional suction-assisted lipectomy in this anatomic area. 11,50 The senior author (FGF), to date, has acceptable results from conventional liposuction and direct lipectomy in the setting of rhytidectomy. Some of the undermining of the flaps may also be accomplished with the liposuction cannula, thus allowing greater mobility of the skin flaps while maintaining some of the vascular connections with underlying structures (►Fig.…”
