As a psychiatrist based in Taiwan and specializing in addiction treatment, I would like to share my insights on how the issue of impulse buying under the influence of alcohol or other substances is prevalent in our clinical practice. The connection between alcohol consumption and impulsive online shopping is a common phenomenon observed in our clinical setting. The article's findings regarding the impact of hazardous and harmful patterns of alcohol consumption on impulsivity and compulsive buying behavior are consistent with the experiences of many of our patients. This issue, which can lead to financial and personal distress, warrants further attention and research.Furthermore, Taiwan has a notable problem with the misuse of sleeping pills. In clinical practice, we often come across cases where patients impulsively make purchases after taking sleep medications. Similar to the effects of alcohol, these medications, specifically benzodiazepines, can impair judgment and inhibit selfcontrol, resulting in impulsive shopping behavior (Paton, 2018). This connection between benzodiazepines and impulse control problems highlights the need to consider a broader range of substances that might contribute to compulsive buying behaviors.
