Anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) is an efficient and promising pathway for nitrogen removal from wastewater, but its application is usually confined by the low growth rate and susceptibility to surroundings of anammox bacteria. In this study, cultured anammox sludge was immobilized using polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-sodium alginate (SA) gel and put into a lab-scale column reactor at a packing ratio of 20%, and nitrogen removal performance was evaluated at two hydraulic retention times (HRTs). Anammox was rapidly initiated in the reactor, with ammonium and nitrite removal efficiency reaching 82.3% and 84.7% after an operation period of 10 d. Nitrogen removal efficiency declined greatly after the reduction of HRT from 24 h to 12 h, but then recovered quickly, with an average TN removal rate of 84.5% and 0.43 kg·m -3 ·d -1 achieved under the steady operational state. The immobilized anammox reactor performed significantly better and was more stable in nitrogen removal than that with anammox sludge inoculated directly, indicating the superiority of cell entrapment of anammox biomass in addition to its easy reservation. Nitrogen removal in the reactor increased after stable operation with the HRT. It has potential to apply immobilized anammox sludge entrapped by PVA-SA gel for the convenient establishment of an anammox reactor with stable and high nitrogen removal rates.

: Immobilization of anaerobic ammonium oxidizing bacteria has been studied to enhance the biomass retention of the slowly growing bacteria and the process stability. The purpose of this study was to compare the nitrogen removal efficiency of granular and immobilized anammox bacteria with poly vinyl alcohol and alginate. The specific anammox activity of the granular, homoginized and immobilized anammox bacteria were 0.016±0.0002 gN/gVSS/d, 0.011±0.001 gN/gVSS/d and 0.007±0.0005 gN/gVSS/d, respectively. Although the activity decreased to 43.7 % of the original one due to low pH and O 2 exposure during the homogination and the immobilization, it was rapidly recovered within 7 days in the following continuous culture.When synthetic T-N concentrations of 100, 200, 400, 800 mg/L were fed, the immobilized anammox bacteria showed higher nitrogen removal efficiencies at all operational conditions than those of granular anammox bacteria. When the sludge retention time was shorten below 30.7 days and the reject water was fed, the nitrite removal efficiency of the granular anammox bacteria dropped to 8 % of the initial value, while that of the immobilized anammox bacteria was maintained over 95 % of the initial one.The immobilization with poly vinyl alcohol and alginate would be a feasible method to improve the performance and stability of the anammox process.

BACKGROUND Microalgae which have greater biodegradable fractions than other organics were chosen as a carbon source for sulfate‐reducing bacteria (SRB). Immobilized SRB–microalgae beads were then prepared and used for bioremediation of synthetic copper mine wastewater. RESULTS Hydrolysis fermentation of the microalgae was observed and it was noted that the microalgae were first degraded to volatile fatty acids by co‐existing fermentative bacteria; they then served as a carbon source for SRB. Freshly prepared immobilized SRB beads not only possessed high mechanical strength and mass transfer ability, but also showed better sulfate reduction than that of suspended SRB. Immobilized SRB‐Scenedesmus obliquus beads packed in the upflow bioreactor were suitable for the treatment of copper mine wastewater, as shown by the high removal efficiency of their sulfate (182.17 mg SO42‐ g‐1 microalgae day‐1) and copper ions (45.28 mg Cu2+ g‐1 microalgae day‐1), and low discharge of chemical oxygen demand. After the reaction, metal sulfides were not produced on the bead surfaces, but likely within them. CONCLUSIONS The anaerobic bioreactor, filled with immobilized SRB‐Scenedesmus obliquus beads, demonstrated excellent removal efficiency and low discharge of chemical oxygen demand, which may provide a promising strategy for dealing with heavy metal pollution in water. © 2017 Society of Chemical Industry
