Reinterpretation of LHC Results for New Physics: Status and recommendations after Run 2

Abstract: We report on the status of efforts to improve the reinterpretation of searches and measurements at the LHC in terms of models for new physics, in the context of the LHC Reinterpretation Forum. We detail current experimental offerings in direct searches for new particles, measurements, technical implementations and Open Data, and provide a set of recommendations for further improving the presentation of LHC results in order to better enable reinterpretation in the future. We also provide a brief description o… Show more

“…Concretely, the analysis [15] gives r obs (r exp ) = 1.3 (1.11) for the X d , and r obs (r exp ) = 1.28 (1.26) for the X 1 t . 10 Finally, we point out that very similar conclusions are drawn for all the high score proto-models shown in figure 8. Of course, all these conclusions may be challenged (or strengthened) by new results for full Run 2 luminosity, which are not yet included in the SModelS database, e.g.…”

“…So far, however, merely one third of the available simplified model results are EMs. Third, as also stressed in [10], correlation data enabling the combination of signal regions are essential for avoiding either overly conservative or over-enthusiastic interpretations, and for stabilising global fits. 12 So far, however, appropriate correlation data in combination with EMs are available for only four analyses.…”

“…Furthermore, CMS has historically published fewer routines than ATLAS, a fact manifest in the dominance by ATLAS measurements of the CL s limits shown in this paper. We hope that our results add further encouragement for all collider physics experiments to make public re-interpretation routines and bin-correlation data a core feature of their publication and data-preservation processes [50]. case is considered for doublets instead of 1 2 : 1 4 : 1 4 , as motivated by Ref.…”

“…Here, the recasting of LLP searches is also a high priority, as theories with such particles are very easily constrained, with the limits reaching much higher masses than for searches for promptly decaying particles. A review of available tools for reinterpretation and detailed recommendations for the presentation of results from new physics searches are available in [137].…”
