Reinforcing effect of surface‐modified multiwalled carbon nanotubes on flexural response of E‐glass/epoxy isogrid‐stiffened composite panels

Abstract: The lack of scientific information about the utilization of nanoparticles on grid‐stiffened composite (GSC) fabrication was the driving force for the selection of this study. In the present work, GSC panels reinforced with various amounts of surface modified multi‐walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) (0–0.5 wt% at a step of 0.1 wt%) have been investigated in terms of their capability to improve the mechanical properties under three‐point flexural condition. Out of these specimens, the maximum value of improvement … Show more

“…In fact, C=C and C–C form the honeycomb structure of graphene, while O and H atoms locate on the surface of graphene in the form of O–H, C–H, and C=O functional groups. After modification with 3‐GPTS, a new peak appears at around 900 cm −1 , which is assigned to Si–O–C band representing the presence of chemical bonding between the silane compound and GONPs . Two peaks located at 2,932 and 2,880 cm −1 demonstrate the CH 3 asymmetric stretching and CH 2 stretching of 3‐GPTS coupling agent, respectively.…”

“…The pH of the mixture was adjusted to 4–5. The reasons we selected an acidic media were to increase the level of silanol formation and to decrease self‐condensation reactions between the hydrolyzed silanol groups . The resulting suspension was centrifuged and washed twice with EtOH to remove the remaining silane compound around the Gr nanoplatelets.…”
