Reinforced concrete thin‐wall dome after eighty years of operation in a marine climate environment

Abstract: The paper presents a description of the construction elements of the Gdynia Seaport main hall dome. Firstly, it provides information about the technical condition of the dome's structure. Secondly, it examines the strength analysis of the thin‐walled reinforced concrete dome covering. Throughout the last 80 years the building has been exposed to an unfavourable marine climate. The analysis of the state of stress and deformations of several construction elements was carried out using a special model worked out … Show more

“…Stage V is the stage of destruction of the element under shear force, through arriving at the composite diagonal compression strength (Figure 13). This type of destruction has been described, in [70], as a shear compression failure. It is observed in those beams that have strong main reinforcement with the simultaneous absence of or very poor transversal reinforcement.…”

“…Both concrete strength and durability should play an essential role in the concrete mix design. The issue of durability is essential in the case of an aggressive environment [17,18,19,20,21,22]. Based on industry experience, we found out that, in European corporate engineering practice, there are a few most used methods for designing a concrete mix.…”
