Effective strain in composites as well as potential rupture and debonding of composite materials play a crucial role in predicting the strength of retrofitted reinforced concrete (RC) beams.However, only limited experimental data on these phenomena is available, mainly due to the inadequacy of traditional monitoring systems. This paper presents a comparative analysis of different instrumentation for monitoring retrofitted RC elements. In particular, the paper addresses beams retrofitted with composite materials (FRP and FRCM) and considers strain gauges (SG), fibre-optic Bragg grating (FBG) sensors, linear variable differential transformer (LVDT), digital image correlation (DIC) and acoustic emission (AE) sensors for monitoring strain, displacement, cracking and debonding. Experiments on six beams were carried out and the measured data from the monitoring devices was compared. The accuracy of DIC for strain and displacement monitoring, as well as the ability of using AE for detecting cracks and debonding, were shown to match the performance of traditional methods, with the added benefit of providing full-field and depth monitoring. This is of particular interest for compositestrengthened concrete elements in which the accurate measurements of effective strain and debonding of the composite material can lead to developing more precise design formulae.

This paper is focused on the performance of a proposed scheme for seismic strengthening of shear deficient joints of 3D reinforced concrete (RC) corner beam-column connections. This technique is composed of a combination of GFRP sheets and a steel cage, and does not require perforating the existing concrete elements to anchor the FRP sheets. Two similar full-scale beam-column connections were made without any transverse reinforcement in their joint region. One of which was tested in its as-built condition, taken as control specimen, while the other one was tested after strengthening. Seismic behaviour of these specimens were studied under a cyclic loading pattern imposed simultaneously with a constant column's axial load. Comparison of the test results of these specimens revealed a noticeable improvement in the seismic response of the strengthened specimen. This achievement along with the application feasibility of this technique indicates the suitability of the proposed strengthening scheme for practical applications. Finally, the experimentally obtained joint shear strength of the control and retrofitted specimens are compared to the one estimated by the relationships of the softened strut-and-tie model and ACI-318, respectively. This comparison revealed a satisfactory prediction of joint shear strength for both specimens, the as-built and the strengthened one.

A new empirical model to estimate the joint shear strength of both exterior and interior beam-column connections is proposed. In the model, four parameters that have the most influence on joint shear strength are considered.Among these four, a new parameter is introduced to consider the bond condition and the possibility of beam bars transferring joint shear force into the columns. Consideration of this parameter in the model significantly improves the accuracy of the predicted joint shear strength. To calibrate the model, a large database of 98 reinforced concrete (RC) exterior and 73 RC interior beam-column connections displaying joint failure mode was compiled from the literature. A parametric study was also carried out to evaluate the dependence of the predicted to tested joint shear strength ratio on the four influence parameters using the database. The proposed model showed superior performance over existing models. Moreover, comparisons of the predicted joint shear strength with experimental results and with four existing models showed the accuracy of the proposed model.
