Rehabilitation of Large Diameter PCCP: Relining and Sliplining with Steel Pipe

Abstract: Failures of Prestressed Concrete Cylinder Pipe (PCCP) throughout North American municipal water transmission systems since the 1970's has led to the development of a myriad of rehabilitation technologies. Besides removing and replacing full sections of distressed pipe with new pipe, the most widely used method of rehabilitation of PCCP is the structurally independent, Type IV relining of the host pipe with steel cylinders. Referred to as Steel Cylinder Relining or Sliplining, both of these semi-trenchless tech… Show more

“…Usually when concrete pipes are damaged, they may be encased in reinforced concrete, relined with a steel liner, have a circumferential post-tensioning strand added to them, or even attached to a smaller diameter high-strength composite material on the outer face of the pipe [10]. These methods, however, are neither time-nor cost-effective as they involve removing the earthworks around the structurally damaged area [11]. In recent years, a new method has come to the forefront: the installation of carbon fiber reinforced polymer sheets (CFRP).…”

“…Combined with former theories and technologies, some methods were proposed to rehabilitate PCCP. However, all these methods require excavation of the cover soil and processing of the complicated construction technologies by heavy machinery, which are costly and time-consuming [1][2][3][4]. Installing carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) on the inner concrete to strengthen PCCP is an effective way to minimize these negative effects.…”

“…The cost for this option is often higher when the work takes place in an urban environment. Welded steel pipe is typically used as the replacement pipe material whenever the pipe section replacement option is selected (Rahman et. al., 2012).…”

“…The CFRP renewal option has been used since the late 1990s, and was first applied inside a PCCP line at a nuclear power plant in Arizona. Several water utilities have used this option to renew distressed pipe sections in their systems (Rahman et. al, 2012).…”
