Purpose This paper aims to explore the history of Anglican churches in Malaysia and discusses their typical features and their respective maintenance practices. Design/methodology/approach A narrative review of 84 literacy sources published between 1967 and 2020 on the development and features of Anglican churches in Malaysia, along with recommendations on maintenance practices from the asset and facilities management perspective. The exploration of churches’ features follows three main disciplines in building maintenance according to the Jabatan Kerja Raya Guideline for as-built buildings in Malaysia. Findings The findings of the study have then been tabulated to form a maintenance framework to recommend suitable maintenance practices on specific building components based on different materials. The paper argues that as places of worship, the assets of religious facilities are intangible compared to any other types of building that serve a tangible function (i.e. shelter, commercial or industrial operation). Throughout the exploration of their maintenance practices suggested by vast sources of literature, it is proven that the maintenance of churches is not as straightforward as merely remedying the defects, but it requires the maintenance to radically minimise any disturbance to their aesthetics, thus making maintenance a more challenging task at churches. Originality/value This paper proposes a maintenance framework for Anglican churches in Malaysia by categorising building disciplines and their corresponding building components, which supports future research to improve the maintenance practices of religious facilities.

The restoration, rehabilitation, strengthening and conservation of heritage structures is a field of study, research and development that is usually ignored by Civil Engineers and Structural Engineers. As there are more advances and growth in the fields of concrete structures and construction of modern buildings with the latest technology and design, which has also become the buzzing area towards the economic growth. This paper involves the study and review of various research papers dealing with the rehabilitation, restoration and conservation of heritage structures using neo-methods, with a deep analysis of the materials that are to be used. Conservation of heritage structures is becoming the growing need of the hour due to the rapid deterioration of structures owing to various natural and man-made factors. When an Indian perspective is considered it becomes even more necessary to delve deep into the various aspects of preserving our historic structures by strengthening them structurally.

“…In Central India, the famous Charminar (the mosque of four minarets) the historical monument built in1591-1593 by Quali Qutub Shah, the fifth ruler of the Qutub Shahi, made use of granite, lime mortar along with use of shell, Jaggery and white bulk of eggs to enhance the properties of mortars and plasters (Dorn Carran et al, 2011). Similarly the historic St. Lourdes Church in Tiruchirappalli, India was rehabilitated and renovated using lime and sand in the ratio of 1:2 along with Jaggery and gall nut (Natarajan et al, 2010). Taking the concept of use of Jaggery in these historical monuments, we have used Jaggery along with calcium oxide in few of our formulations.…”

A B S T R A C TThe requirements of coatings are increasing day by day for protecting different substrates from various types of stresses. Today, the decorative paints specifically water based paints are in liquid form resulting in increased handling cost. The purpose of this paper is to develop a single component powder putty and powder paint using easily available nonconventional materials. This paper deals with studies in effect of concentration and mode of addition of various components on properties of paint for decorative applications. These powder putty and powder paint formulations have been evaluated and compared with conventional decorative paints. The powder paint formulations have also been evaluated for exterior applications viz. mechanical, thermally insulating and chemical performance properties. The effects of concentration of glass microspheres on properties of powder paints have also been studied. It has been seen that powder putty and powder paint show satisfactory performance as compared to conventional putty paste and liquid paint. The new Paint formulations, added with glass microspheres are found to give very good heat insulation, where temperature difference is 6 to 8% with respect to surrounding temperature and the coating. These products are based on simple and easily available raw materials. The existing equipment /machinery can be used for preparation of these products. Also this new coating is applicator friendly and easy to apply.
