Males of some species have been shown not to ejaculate all the sperm they have present in the duplex in a single mating (Proshold & Bernon 1994; Hiroyoshi 1995), suggesting that males can decide how many sperm to ejaculate at a given mating. Thus, the ability of males to store sperm in the duplex provides a mechanism for strategic allocation of sperm between matings.…”
