Regulation of Macromolecular Synthesis by Oestrogen: A Developmental Approach

Abstract

The long-range aim of the studies briefly described in this review is to establish a cell-free system for the induction of specific proteins by oestrogens. Such a cell-free system is necessary to have a biochemical end point capable of distinguishing specific from nonspecific binding of oestrogen-receptor complexes to acceptor sites in chromatin (see reviews by King & Mainwaring, 1974a,b; O'Malley & Means, 1974) as well as to investigate the sequential acquisition of responsiveness to oestrogen in rat uterus during postnatal development. This series of changes (Kaye et al., 1974
