Regulation of Homeostasis by Neuropeptide Y: Involvement in Food Intake

Abstract: : Obesity leads to several metabolic disorders and, unfortunately, current pharmacological treatments for obesity are not very effective. In feeding mechanisms, the hypothalamus and some neuropeptides play an important role. Many data show that neuropeptide Y (NPY) is involved in these mechanisms. The aim of this review is to update the physiological actions mediated by the orexigenic peptide NPY, via its receptors, in the control of food intake and to review its involvement in food intake disorders. The … Show more

“…The orexigenic effect is expected to stimulate food intake in patients with cancer who lose appetite due to cachexia [ 53 ] and elderly individuals with sarcopenia based on poor nutritional status, which contributes to a loss of muscle mass [ 54 , 55 ]. Other endogenous neuropeptides, such as neuropeptide Y, ghrelin, and orexin, have orexigenic activity but are inactivated when administered orally [ 56 , 57 , 58 ]; however, p.o. rubiscolin-6 has been shown to evoke these effects.…”

“…NPY is a 36-amino acid peptide neurotransmitter implicated in physiological processes such as energy homeostasis 36 , learning and memory 37,38 , acting on different types of Gi/o-coupled NPY receptors 39 . NPY also plays a role in regulating memory systems relevant to pathophysiology of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) with therapeutic potential 40 , yet its brain-region- and cell-type-specific origin, spatiotemporal targeting and signaling mechanisms in fear memory remain ambiguous.…”

“…Антагонисты рецепторов NPY тестируются в качестве препаратов Other problems of endocrinology против ожирения [27]. Периферическое введение антагониста NPY-рецептора предотвращает ожирение, вызванное «западной диетой» у мышей [28].…”
