Regulation of Heat Shock Factor Pathways by γ-aminobutyric Acid (GABA) Associated with Thermotolerance of Creeping Bentgrass

Abstract: Activation and enhancement of heat shock factor (HSF) pathways are important adaptive responses to heat stress in plants. The γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) plays an important role in regulating heat tolerance, but it is unclear whether GABA-induced thermotolerance is associated with activation of HSF pathways in plants. In this study, the changes of endogenous GABA level affecting physiological responses and genes involved in HSF pathways were investigated in creeping bentgrass during heat stress. The increase in… Show more

“…While β-tomatine levels were reduced after HS treatment, ten compounds had increased levels either directly after the HS treatment or upon recovery when compared to the control leaves ( Figure 1 ). Among the accumulated metabolites we detected many that have been previously shown to have a positive impact on thermotolerance such as GABA, sugars, steroids, and several phenylpropanoid compounds and flavonoids ( Commisso et al, 2016 ; Liu et al, 2019 ). Alterations in the profile of metabolites indicate either a variance in thermosensitivity levels of key enzymes and/or a variation in the levels of regulation of the relevant genes and proteins.…”

“…Foliar spray of medium level of nitrogen (7 kg·ha −1 ) further improved heat-induced HSP90, HSP70, and sHSP accumulation in leaves contributing to enhanced thermotolerance in creeping bentgrass [ 36 ]. Transcriptional analyses also proved that exogenous GABA could significantly up-regulate HSP17.8 , HSP26.7 , HSP70 , and HSP90.1-b1 expression in leaves of creeping bentgrass under high temperature condition, whereas the application of biosynthesis inhibitor of GABA depressed heat-induced increases in these genes expression [ 37 ]. The results were consistent with our current findings, which indicated that GABA-induced the accumulation of HSP90, HSP70, and HSP16.9 could play central roles in establishing heat tolerance in creeping bentgrass.…”

“…The damage degree of membrane structure is related to the intensity of stress, the duration of stress, the resistance of crop varieties and other factors. Therefore, the determination of plasma membrane permeability can often be used as one of the physiological indexes of leaf activity [31][32][33][34].…”
