Regulation of Angiopoietin-Like Proteins (ANGPTLs) 3 and 8 by Insulin

Abstract: Insulin decreases plasma ANGPTL3 by decreasing ANGPTL3 expression in the liver. Insulin markedly increases ANGPTL8 in adipose tissue and the liver but not in plasma. These data show that measurement of plasma ANGPTL3 but not -8 reflects insulin action in target tissues.

“…This would be fully consistent with its robust induction by insulin in WAT (Nidhina Haridas et al, 2015;Soronen et al, 2012). Under circumstances favouring FA deposition as TGs in WAT, it is plausible that hydrolysis of the stored TGs should simultaneously be suppressed.…”

“…Several studies have documented an induction of the Angptl8 message during adipocyte differentiation (Ebert et al, 2014;Ren et al, 2012) and by their treatment with insulin, which favours the storage of FAs as TGs (Ebert et al, 2014;Nidhina Haridas et al, 2015;Ren et al, 2012). In a previous study, Ren et al (2012) carried out transient siRNA-mediated knockdown of Angptl8 in the 3T3-L1 adipocyte model and observed a defect in their adipocytic differentiation.…”

“…The complex pathogenetic condition involves glucose and lipid metabolism, pancreatic function, and various adipocyte/ hepatocyte-derived cytokines (23), while betatrophin is identified as an adipokine/hepatokine related to the function of pancreatic islets and the regulation of lipid metabolism (5,9,10,24). Thus, we conducted a case control study to assess the hypothesis whether serum betatrophin relates to MetS.…”
