“…The increase in serum ammonia concentrations by exposure to ambient ammonia is consistent with previous studies (Vedel, Korsgaard & Jensen ). Trout, carp and goldfish exposed to high environmental ammonia received a net influx of ammonia from the medium into the tissue, which was evident from a dramatic increase in ammonia concentrations (Sinha, Giblen, AbdElgawad, De Rop, Asard, Blust & De Boeck ). The mechanism underlying these changes is thought to be a detoxification of ammonia in a reaction catalysed by GS (Haghighat & McCandless ).…”

“…Less ammonia tolerant teleosts such as the common carp (Cyprinus carpio) and the rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) experienced respective plasma T Amm levels of 1400 μmol L −1 and 2200 μmol L −1 during exposure to 1 mmol L − 1 T Amm in fresh water (Sinha et al, 2013a). Among the fishes with the highest reported tolerances to ammonia are the air-breathing amphibious fishes, found predominately in tropical regions.…”

“…After centrifugation and filtration by Millipore micro filters (0.2 lM pore size), glycine and serine contents were determined by using a Waters Acquity UPLC-tqd system (Milford, MA, USA) equipped with a BEH amide 2.1 9 50 column (Sinha et al, 2013). After centrifugation, the supernatant was vacuum evaporated, and the pellet was resuspended in 1 ml chloroform.…”
